What an event it was, spectacular tennis showcasing the top 4 pairs from the past two years. It was always expected that Chicago would put on a “good show”, it most certainly was one and one which the spectators and players will be remembering for years.
The final number of sets played out of a possible 9 was 7 and the set scores were 1/6, 6/5, 3/6, 6/3, 6/3, 6/3, 6/5.
After the first day of play the set score was level at 2 sets apiece. John Lumley and Steve Virgona realistically probably thought they could have been 3/1 up. Tim Chisholm and Camden Riviere probably felt relieved they had been able to neutralise the threat of their opponents by keeping the score line at 2/2. Tim Chisholm mentioned he had never played so badly and the second day could only get better. It did and the champions were devastatingly good. That is not to say Lumley and Virgona were bad, they most certainly were not and some of the finest rallies ever seen were won by Lumley and Virgona.
You are urged to go to the stream of the event. It is surely the best rest ever, which even had the hardened “seen it all before” commentators of Taylor-Matthews and Sayers gasping. It occurred in the 7th set when the game score stood at 4/2 in Lumley and Virgona’s favour and 15/0 to Lumley and Virgona.
The list of those who have been the doubles world champions is a small list and it is interesting to see some of the other names who have been the finalist.
