About The Tennis & Racquet Club

Founded in 1902, the Tennis & Racquet Club is one of Boston’s most distinctive private clubs, bringing together tradition, athletic excellence, and a warm, spirited community in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay.

The Club is home to three historic racquet sports, court tennis, racquets, and squash, offering members the opportunity to compete, learn, and socialize across a range of levels. From friendly weekly games to national tournaments, the T&R has long been a gathering place for those who value competition, camaraderie, and the enduring traditions of sport.

The Role

The Court Tennis Professional is responsible for the professional delivery and development of all aspects of the Court Tennis program of the Club. The Court Tennis Professional is also responsible for ensuring that Member and guest expectations, with respect to the delivery and development of the Court Tennis program (and sports programs generally) at the Club, are consistently met or exceeded. The Court Tennis Professional reports directly to the General Manager.

The specific areas of responsibility for the Court Tennis Professional include:

• Foster the growth of court tennis at the Club through lessons, group clinics, leagues, competitions, and other member programming.
• Organize appropriate games and match play for members and visitors across a range of playing levels.
• Assist with the planning and execution of internal, national, and international court tennis competitions hosted by the Club.
• Help drive court usage during both peak and non-peak times, including slower periods of the year.
• Promote the Club’s reputation and standing within the broader court tennis and racquet sports communities.
• Assist members with pro shop purchases when present, including guidance on equipment, apparel, and related merchandise.
• Fabricate and maintain an adequate supply of court tennis balls, while also sourcing and stocking squash and racquets balls as needed.
• Work with, and under the direction of, the General Manager to define and execute the Club’s sports programming strategy.
• Help ensure the court tennis facilities are safe, clean, well-maintained, and consistently playable.
• Maintain an active and professional presence at the Club, engaging positively with members, guests, staff, and visitors.

The Court Tennis Professional position is structured as a full-time five day role. However, the nature of club programming requires flexibility, and the Court Tennis Professional is expected to be available for special events, including tournaments, nationally sanctioned competitions, member social events, and other Club functions which may require additional days. The Club will provide reasonable advance notice of such commitments wherever possible.

While the primary focus of the Court Tennis Professional is the sport of Court Tennis, The Tennis & Racquet Club believes that its pro shop staff should work together to build the overall sports program as a whole. In support of this philosophy, the Court Tennis Professional may, from time to time, have the opportunity to earn additional commission revenue by providing instruction in squash and/or racquets. Any such instruction shall be coordinated with the Club’s other teaching professionals and scheduled in a manner that complements, rather than conflicts with, the primary responsibilities of the role.

Compensation

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and will include a competitive base salary together with commission-based earnings from teaching, marking, and other service-based activities. Full details will be provided to candidates progressing through the interview process.
